Professional tax, in plain words
What is professional tax?
A state tax on employment, deducted by the employer from salary and paid to the state. The Constitution caps it at ₹2,500 a year per person, so most states charge ₹200 a month, some with ₹300 in February.
Which states levy it?
20 states and UTs, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and others do not. Odisha repealed it from 1 April 2026.
What changed recently?
West Bengal raised its exemption to ₹20,000 a month with new slabs from 1 October 2026. Karnataka made February ₹300 from April 2025. Assam revised its slabs from April 2025, and Kerala raised its half-yearly rates from October 2024.
Is professional tax deductible from income tax?
Yes under the old regime, as a deduction from salary. The new regime does not allow it.
